CM Program Advisory Committee Guidelines

Mission:
To provide advice, counsel, and support to Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Construction Management (CM) program.

Vision:
Make EMU’s CM program a world-class academic opportunity with industry and educational cooperation.

Membership: 
The EMU CM advisory committee (committee) will maintain a minimum of nine external representatives and program faculty.  Program faculty will be voting members of the advisory committee. 

Committee membership will be reflective of the broad range of knowledge, skills, and/or attributes represented by the program academic profile.  The minimum criteria for selection of external advisory committee members are:

  1. Has an education or management experience related to the curricular area
  2. Is willing to attend advisory committee meetings and respond to written and verbal requests
  3. Is familiar with the skills and knowledge required by practitioners in the industry

At least one member of the committee will be a member of the program alumni chapter.  Alumni members will never become a majority of the committee.

Committee members, program faculty, the department head, and/or the dean may nominate new committee members.  Nominated committee members will be voted on by the committee, and those receiving the support of the majority of the voting members will be appointed.

Committee members are selected for a three-year term.  Membership is renewable, and staggered terms are suggested to ensure continuity.  Recruitment of new members is on an ongoing basis. 

The chair of the committee will be elected at the fall meeting for a two-year term and is elected by support of the majority of voting members.  The vote shall be by written tabulation.
A full, current roster, including the name, title, company, address, phone, e-mail address, and committee position will be maintained by the faculty of the program and distributed at each committee meeting.  Committee members names and company affiliation will be posted to the CM program and alumni websites. 

Termination of Membership: 
Members may be removed from the committee by a majority of voting members.  The vote shall be written tabulation. 

Responsibilities of Members:  Members should:
  1. Make a strong effort to attend bi-annual meetings
  2. Provide knowledge and expertise
  3. Be familiar with the current skills and knowledge required by practitioners in the industry
  4. Assess and comment on department/program strategic direction
  5. Help ensure the program is attune to professional and community trends
  6. Provide invaluable networking opportunities to benefit students and faculty
  7. Assist in validation of learning outcomes
  8. Offer advice on marketing, student recruitment, student internships, and job placement
  9. Provide advice and assistance on faculty recruitment, faculty development, and grant opportunities
  10. Provide early input in the course and program development process
  11. Assist in the quality assurance and accreditation of the program
  12. Represent a cross section of interests and perspectives
  13. Advise, coordinate and recommend on specific topics/projects
  14. Facilitate the work of the committee and ensure open and honest representation
  15. Actively participate in discussions
  16. Create a climate of consensus, maintain integrity and disagree as an ally
  17. Seek input and assistance from external constituents when appropriate and provide expertise and/or background information
  18. Be sensitive to the community with which the committee represents
  19. Promote good will and trust
  20. Serve as a liaison between department, staff, industry and community
  21. Provide assistance and support to the fundraising activities of the program

Meetings: 
It is recommended the committee meet twice a year, but will be required to meet at least once a year.  The chair shall call all meetings of the committee and notify all members of scheduled meetings at least 30 days in advance of each meeting.  The chair, as needed, may call special meetings of the committee.

For any issue requiring a vote by membership, a quorum must be present at the scheduled committee meeting.  Presence at the meeting may be in person, by phone, or videoconference.  A quorum is defined as a majority of voting members identified on the committee roster at the time of the scheduled advisory committee meeting.  

Agenda:
An agenda for each committee meeting will be developed by the program coordinator 30 days in advance of the advisory committee meeting with input from the committee chair and faculty, at minimum, and may also include items at the recommendation of members at large, faculty, students, accrediting bodies, university administrators, alumni, and others.  The agenda will be distributed, by CM faculty, to committee members two weeks in advance of the scheduled meeting and posted to the CM program and alumni websites.

A standing agenda will include:
  1. Curriculum development and issues
  2. Program assessment of curriculum
  3. Student issues and enrollment trends including co-op and internship opportunities, job placement and other industry partnership
  4. Promotion of program in the community
  5. Identification of career pathways and articulation agreements
  6. Program advocacy feedback on competency of graduates

Additionally, the agenda may include such items as:
  1. Program content
  2. Program resources including equipment and facilities
  3. Placement and follow up of graduates
  4. Grants, scholarships, funding and development options and issues
  5. Faculty/staff development
  6. Other topics as deemed appropriate by members at large, faculty, students, accrediting bodies, university administrators, alumni, and other

Minutes:
A member appointed at the meeting, by the committee chair, will record minutes of each committee meeting.  A CM faculty member will collect the minutes, distribute them to members within 30 days following the meeting, copy to the department head and dean, and post them to the CM program and alumni websites.
-All documents and minutes must be numbered and dated.
